The big difference between granite and quartz

Granite and quartz are very similar and both materials are very popular for kitchen and bathroom countertop construction. Despite their similarity, the process of turning natural stone into countertop is completely different. This is because quartz is an engineered stone that is factory designed from rock crystals and polymer glue. Unlike granite, it does not come directly from rock. Instead, quartz is a mixture of various natural stones and industrial debris such as glass, mirror and silica. Granite is cut into slabs at the quarry and transported in one piece from the vein to the manufacturers. The latter segments it to the desired thickness and applies an epoxy resin to fill the natural cavities of the material. The slabs are then polished before a waterproof sealant is applied. Thus, unlike quartz, granite changes very little in appearance between the quarry and the buyers' home.

Advantages of granite

When comparing granite and quartz, one quickly realizes that granite represents a much better value for money. Granite is generally more resistant to heat, breakage and scratches than quartz. However, we recommend using a cutting board to avoid dulling your knives. In addition, if the countertop receives a significant impact, especially near the edges, it may crack or crumble.

You should also be aware that different colors and finishes of granite have different characteristics. For example, light-colored slabs are generally less resistant and satin finishes are more likely to stain when there is a grease spill.

However, despite some shortcomings, granite is still a great option for a kitchen or bathroom countertop. You won't regret your choice!
